What is Liberal Arts?

The phrase “Liberal Arts” derives from the Latin words ‘Liberales’ meaning ‘free’ and ‘Artes’ meaning ‘art or principled practice’. The program Liberal Arts is a traditional academic program in Western higher education. A liberal arts education refers to that of a university education, rather than a practical course of study you can find in a vocational, professional or technical program.

A Liberal Arts program involves being able to combine courses in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics, Law and Linguistics, Philosophy and Physics and so on. The educational concept of this Liberal Arts program is based on the principle that many of today’s complex problems cannot be resolved with monodisciplinary actions. When following a Liberal Arts program, students can design their own Bachelor’s program depending on their interests.

At UCR, you will live and study together with other students from around the world on our international campus, located in Middelburg (Zeeland). In the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Liberal Arts at UCR, you will learn to understand complex global issues and search for creative solutions by combining insights from different scientific disciplines. For example, students focus on two to three related fields of study, resulting in combinations such as Politics, Law, and Economics (major: Social Sciences); History, Literature, and Antiquity (major: Arts & Humanities); or Earth & Environmental Science and Biology (major: Science). Moreover, interdomain combinations are possible, such as Anthropology, Law and Life Science; Mathematics and Music; and Literature and Cognitive Science.

At UCR, emphasis is placed on undergraduate research throughout the entire Bachelor’s program. This is because at UCR we believe that studying is about asking the right questions and having methodological tools to answer them. Students therefore have mandatory courses in research methodology from the very beginning. Along with their professors, former UCR students have conducted and presented original research in academic journals and at conferences.
