University College Roosevelt (UCR) is implementing a strategic reorganization to modernize its academic offerings, enhance student satisfaction, and strengthen its connection with the Zeeland region. Like many Dutch higher education institutions, UCR faces declining government funding and student numbers. With the support of the University of Utrecht and extensive input from stakeholders, UCR has developed a plan to ensure long-term sustainability and academic excellence.
Starting in the 2025/2026 academic year, UCR will introduce a renewed Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum with six interdisciplinary clusters: “Business & Entrepreneurship”, “Media, Culture & Communication”, “Government & Society”, “Data Science & Intelligent Systems”, “Health, Cognition & Behavior”, and “Environment & Sustainability”. These changes will provide students with a more flexible and future-oriented education while maintaining UCR’s commitment to academic excellence.
The plan also strengthens UCR’s engagement with the Zeeland community through Community Engaged Learning (CEL) and a “living lab” approach, where students collaborate with local businesses, government institutions, and non-profits on real-world projects. Additionally, the restructuring aims to achieve €2 million in annual cost savings through operational efficiencies and staff reductions.
“We understand that this transition will have a significant impact on our faculty, staff, and students,” said Prof. Dr. J.C.M. Smeekens, Interim Dean of UCR. “Our priority is to support everyone through this process while ensuring UCR remains a leading institution for Liberal Arts and Sciences education in the Netherlands.”

UCR kondigt strategisch reorganisatieplan aan
University College Roosevelt (UCR) kondigt vandaag een reorganisatieplan aan, gericht op het toekomstbestendig maken van de universiteit. Het plan beoogt het onderwijsaanbod te moderniseren om aantrekkelijkheid en tevredenheid voor studenten te verhogen. Met het plan wil UCR beter inspelen op de toenemende concurrentie in het hoger onderwijs en zich nadrukkelijker verbinden met Zeeland.
Na uitgebreid overleg met gekozen vertegenwoordigers van studenten, medewerkers en andere betrokkenen is besloten om deze stap te zetten. UCR kampt met verminderde overheidsfinanciering en dalende studentenaantallen, net als veel andere onderwijsinstellingen in Nederland. Daarom heeft het bestuur, in opdracht van de Raad van Toezicht, met steun van de Universiteit Utrecht, en uitgebreid advies van de Ondernemingsraad een reorganisatieplan opgesteld.
Vanaf het academisch jaar 2025/2026 introduceert UCR een vernieuwd Liberal Arts and Sciences-curriculum met zes interdisciplinaire clusters: “Business & Entrepreneurship”, “Media, Culture & Communication”, “Government & Society”, “Data Science & Intelligent Systems”, “Health, Cognition & Behavior”, en “Environment & Sustainability”. Deze veranderingen bieden studenten een flexibeler en toekomstgericht onderwijsprogramma, terwijl UCR’s toewijding aan academische excellentie behouden blijft.
Het plan versterkt ook de betrokkenheid van UCR bij de Zeeuwse gemeenschap via Community Engaged Learning (CEL) en een “living lab”-aanpak, waarbij studenten samenwerken met lokale bedrijven, overheidsinstellingen en non-profitorganisaties aan praktijkgerichte projecten. Daarnaast is de herstructurering gericht op een jaarlijkse kostenbesparing van €2 miljoen door operationele efficiëntie en personeelsreducties.
“We begrijpen dat deze transitie een grote impact zal hebben op onze docenten, medewerkers en studenten,” zegt Prof. Dr. J.C.M. Smeekens, interim Dean van UCR. “Onze prioriteit is om iedereen in dit proces te ondersteunen en tegelijkertijd te waarborgen dat UCR een toonaangevende instelling blijft voor Liberal Arts and Sciences-onderwijs in Nederland.”
