Liberal Arts & Sciences

Liberal Arts & Sciences

A degree that starts with your questions and not someone else’s answers

Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) is a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to university education that lets you explore different academic fields before narrowing your focus. Instead of choosing a fixed major on day one, you design your own curriculum; guided by your interests, your questions, and the future you want to create.

At its core, LAS is about learning how to think; not just what to think. It challenges you to make connections across disciplines, to ask deeper questions, and to become an independent, responsible thinker in a complex world.

Where does Liberal Arts and Sciences come from?

Where does Liberal Arts and Sciences come from?

Liberal Arts and Sciences has its roots in ancient education systems, going back to the classical idea of the liberalis artes – the “free arts” that helped individuals think, speak, and act as informed citizens. In the modern era, this tradition evolved into the Liberal Arts model used in many top universities in the United States and around the world.

In recent decades, LAS programs have gained recognition across Europe; offering an alternative to traditional, one-track study paths. Today, more and more students are choosing LAS because it matches the reality of the world they’re entering: complex, connected, and constantly changing.

Why choose a Liberal Arts and Sciences degree?

Why choose a Liberal Arts and Sciences degree?

Liberal Arts and Sciences is ideal for students who are curious about more than one subject, and who want an education that values breadth as well as depth. It’s for those who don’t want to be boxed into a single direction, but who also don’t want to compromise on academic rigor.

With an LAS degree, you’ll learn to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve real-world problems from multiple angles. You’ll gain more than knowledge; you’ll gain the mindset and skills to navigate change, complexity, and new ideas throughout your life.

Because LAS is interdisciplinary, international, and future-focused, it prepares you for many different career paths: from sustainability to law, from business to public health, from politics to data science. It’s also excellent preparation for graduate study, where the ability to think beyond the boundaries of one field is increasingly in demand.

What does Liberal Arts and Sciences look like at UCR?

What does Liberal Arts and Sciences look like at UCR?

At University College Roosevelt, we take the LAS model further. Yes, you’ll choose your own combination of courses – across fields of study like politics, psychology, data science, environmental studies, media, and more. But we don’t stop at “pick and mix.” Our course offering evolves every year, shaped by the world around us and the interests of our students. We believe your education should reflect not only who you are, but also the future you’re preparing for.

What also sets UCR apart is how we support your personal and professional development:

Professional and Personal Development (PPD) is a mandatory part of your first year, designed to help you transition into university life and build the skills to thrive inside and outside the classroom. You’ll learn how to manage your time, communicate effectively, collaborate in teams, and reflect on your own learning process.

Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) allows you to apply your knowledge in the real world. Through hands-on projects with local organisations and community partners, you’ll connect theory to practice and see how your studies can make a difference beyond the classroom.

Combine all of this with small class sizes, inspiring faculty, and a tight-knit international community, and you have an education that’s more than just a degree. It’s an education built around you.
