Choose Courses that Match your Interests

Choose Courses that Match your Interests

At UCR, you build your program by choosing courses from up to 25 different fields of study across the sciences, social sciences and humanities. This gives you the freedom to explore different subjects, connect disciplines and gradually specialize in the fields of study that interest you most.

The fields of study are brought together in academic clusters, which help you explore related subjects and shape your own academic path. UCR has six academic clusters in which the courses can be found:

Business & Entrepreneurship
Data Science & Intelligent Systems
Environment & Sustainability
Government & Society
Health, Cognition & Behavior
Media, Culture & Communication

You are not limited to one cluster. A student interested in public health might combine Life Science, Psychology, Statistics and Political Sciences. A student interested in sustainable business might study Economics, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science and Communication.

Intermediate: 200-level Courses – +

Intermediate courses allow you to explore a subject in greater depth and apply theories and methods to more complex questions.

Advanced: 300-level Courses – +

Advanced courses offer greater specialization and independence. They involve research and can include practical projects or substantial written work.

Gateway Courses

Gateway Courses

Some intermediate and advanced courses require you to complete a Gateway course first. These courses provide the essential knowledge and methods you need to succeed at a higher level.

Core Courses

Core Courses

Core Courses provide the essential knowledge and skills within an academic field of study. They help you develop sufficient depth and prepare for advanced study and relevant master’s programs.

Responsive Courses

Responsive Courses

Responsive courses focus on current developments, emerging topics and student interests. Their content may change over time, allowing the curriculum to respond to student input, societal challenges and developments in research.

Build a Coherent Program

Build a Coherent Program

Although you have considerable freedom, your program is not a random collection of courses. With guidance from your tutor, you create a combination that provides both breadth and sufficient depth.

Your choices also determine whether you graduate with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and help prepare you for relevant master’s programs and careers.
