Financial Support

Financial Support

Find the support you need to finance your studies at UCR

Three college students looking at a book

Financing your studies is an important part of preparing for university life, and we’re here to help you explore your options. At UCR, we understand that every student’s financial situation is different, which is why we offer a range of support to help make your education more accessible.

On this page, you’ll find information about the financial support available directly from UCR, including our tuition payment and plans need-based scholarships. Further down you will find external funding opportunities that you may be eligible for.

Tuition fee payment plan

Tuition fee payment plan

Since we welcome all types of students regardless of background, we realize that applicants come from a wide range of socio-economic circumstances as well. For that reason, we offer different payments options for the yearly tuition fee. You can pay your tuition in full at once, or in up to nine monthly instalments. A one-time administrative fee of €25 applies if you choose to pay in instalments. Please note that if you are a first-year non-European student, you will need to pay in full, as required by Dutch visa regulations. For your second and third year you may opt to pay in instalments.

UCR Scholarships

UCR Scholarships

For students who do not have the means to fully fund their studies, UCR has a number of different scholarships options.  All UCR scholarships are first and foremost need-based scholarships, for which students qualify only if their parents’ net combined annual income falls below 40,000 euros.

The awarded amount of each scholarship is dependent on whether you pay European or non-European tuition fees. Depending on the scholarship you are awarded, scholarships are either for one year only, or for the full three years of the program.

Regional scholarships – +

The Regional Scholarships are designed to promote and celebrate a diverse and inclusive student community at UCR. These scholarships aim to increase access to higher education for students from regional schools across the world.

We currently offer the following Regional Scholarships:

  • 3 for the Netherlands
  • 1 for Europe
  • 1 for Australia and Asia
  • 1 for Central and South America
  • 1 for North America
  • 1 for Middle East and Africa

In order to qualify for the Regional Scholarships, students need to meet need and be both a national of the region and have completed their final two years of high school in that region.

The scholarship amount rewarded will be 5,000 euros (paid out in equal parts in year 1, 2, and 3) for students from the Netherlands and Europe. All other Regional Scholarships will be 10,000 euros (paid out in equal parts in year 1, 2, and 3).

Scholarship for students affected by war – +

Each year, UCR awards one scholarship to a student affected by war in their home country.

In order to qualify for this scholarship, students need to meet need and be both a national of the region and have completed their final two years of high school in that region.

The scholarship amount rewarded will be 5,000 euros or 10,000 euros (paid out in equal parts in year 1, 2 and 3) dependent on whether you pay European or Non-European tuition fees to study at UCR.

Academic excellence scholarship – +

The Academic Excellence Scholarships recognize and reward outstanding academic achievements among UCR students.

Students who meet need and are performing in the top 10% of their class are welcome to apply for the UCR Academic Excellence Scholarships. UCR awards between 3 and 6 Academic Excellence Scholarships per year.

The scholarship amount awarded will either be 5,000 euros (paid out in equal parts in year 1, 2 and 3) or 10,000 euros (paid out in equal parts in year 1, 2 and 3) dependent on whether you pay European or Non-European tuition fees to study at UCR.

General support grants – +

The General Financial Support Grants aid students who demonstrate financial need and require assistance with tuition and other educational expenses.

Students who meet need, but do not qualify for the Regional Scholarships or Academic Excellence Scholarships can apply for the General Financial Support Grants. UCR awards approximately 10 to 12 General Financial Support Grants per year.

The scholarship amount awarded will either be 1,500 euros (paid out in year 1) or 3,000 euros (paid out in year 1) dependent on whether you pay European or Non-European tuition fees to study at UCR.

“

My life was changed completely with several thousand Euros that my parents didn’t have but that I received in scholarships and interest free loans at the right time.

Applying for a scholarship

Applying for a scholarship

Before you begin your scholarship application, take a moment to use the chat pop-up on this page to see if you qualify and find out which scholarships may be available to you. Please note that you can only apply for one scholarship, so we recommend choosing the option that best fits your situation.

Application – +

The academic application and the scholarship application are two separate processes that have no bearing on one another. If you qualify for one of the UCR scholarships (use the wizard) and wish to do so, you can indicate as much in your academic application. You will then receive another invitation from Osiris to complete your scholarship application.

As part of the application, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • A recent copy of payslip(s) of parent(s)/guardian(s) (in English),
  • A motivation letter detailing your financial need, your family’s financial situation and what you plan to do to generate finances for yourself.

If you are applying for the academic excellence scholarship, we also would like to see:

  • A motivation letter describing your academic extracurricular activities and achievements.

Deadlines – +

Please note that there is a hard deadline to submit both your academic application and scholarship application before March 1 if applying for a Fall intake or September 15 if applying for a Spring intake. Academic applications received after this time (but prior to the regular deadlines) will still be reviewed. However, no scholarship will be awarded to those applicants.

Decisions – +

While you may receive a (conditional) offer of admission earlier, the Scholarship Committee will review all scholarship applications at once and communicate decisions on March 20 for the Fall intake or October 15 for the Spring intake. Your Scholarship Letter will clearly indicate the terms of the scholarship, the amount awarded and how you will receive this. You need to return a signed copy of the scholarship letter to confirm that you accept the terms of the scholarship.

As UCR is part of Utrecht University, Dutch nationals and students with a Dutch residence permit type II, III, IV, or V are automatically eligible for studiefinanciering—the Dutch government’s financial aid system for higher education. This support may include a basic grant, supplementary grant, student travel product, and/or a loan, depending on your situation. For full details and to check your eligibility, visit the website of Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO).

EU/EEA/Swiss Students

EU/EEA/Swiss Students

If you are a national of a country within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland, you are eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan, which will cover your tuition fees.

In some cases, you might also qualify for studiefinanciering, similar to Dutch nationals. To be eligible, you will need to have a job in the Netherlands and earn a minimum wage threshold. More information on both options is available through Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO).
