UCR Welcomes Decision to Scrap Dutch Test Requirement

UCR Welcomes Decision to Scrap Dutch Test Requirement

Franklin Building of University College Roosevelt in Middelburg Zeeland

University College Roosevelt (UCR) welcomes the decision by the Dutch House of Representatives to drop the proposed mandatory Dutch language test for existing English-taught programs. The approved motion ensures that only newly established programs will be subject to the language test, marking an important step in safeguarding international accessibility in higher education, particularly in Zeeland.

“

I’m truly pleased that the concerns from our region have been heard. This decision not only offers clarity and reassurance to our current and prospective international students, but also clearly acknowledges their value to education and community life in Zeeland.”

Gerda Andringa Dean of University College Roosevelt

International students are vital to Zeeland

In recent months, UCR has seen a decline in international student applications, partly due to the uncertainty surrounding the proposed Internationalization in Balance Act (WIB). UCR and other regional institutions feared further decreases, which could have serious consequences for program offerings and Zeeland’s broader appeal as a place to study and work.

A strong collective voice for accessible higher education

The motion, introduced by CDA MP Harmen Krul and adopted with broad parliamentary support, followed a sustained advocacy effort from within the province of Zeeland.

“I’m proud of the close cooperation across our province,” says Andringa. “We spoke with one voice: international students belong here. They enrich Zeeland—not only economically, but also socially and culturally.”

UCR committed to welcoming international students

UCR will actively communicate through campaigns and outreach that international students are welcome—both on our campus in Middelburg and in the province of Zeeland.

“

We want to make it clear that students can not only study here, but also live, work, and feel at home.

Etienne de Jager UCR Managing Director

UCR calls on the Ministry of Education to implement the motion carefully and to continue supporting an inclusive and internationally oriented higher education landscape in the Netherlands.
