Hi, my name is Loralee Thom, and I am a 19-year-old student from Johannesburg, South Africa.
I am a first semester student at University College Roosevelt, and I am pursuing the pre-med track.
I chose University College Roosevelt as I was extremely intrigued by the concept of creating a curriculum that was centered around my academic interests, as well as who I am as an individual. This course flexibility, alongside the pre-med opportunity, really pushed me to research the university in depth where I learnt about the personal academic environment, unique courses and the opportunities provided, such as exchange and masters preparation, during and after your studies at UCR.
Although I still have three years to decide on the career path I would like to pursue, I have always had a keen interest in the medical field and would love to apply to the medical master’s degree, potentially at Utrecht University. However, UCR’s speciality is allowing you to alter this path during your studies and I cannot wait to see where my mindset lies at the end of my bachelor’s degree.
Middelburg was most definitely a cultural shock to me. I am a big city girl who is used to a typical bustling city life, and although I was warned how small Middelburg would be, I was not expecting such a quaint town. Despite this, I have fallen in love with the shops, the friendly local faces, my apartment, and friends.
University College Roosevelt is truly a special place thus far and I look forward to the journey that lies ahead here!
