Well-being and Skill-building
Well-being and Skill-building
At UCR, support isn’t something you only turn to when things go wrong, we build it into your journey from the very start. We believe that prevention is key, guidance should be constant, and personal growth is inevitable when you feel balanced and supported.
Your very first semester includes a course called Professional and Personal Development, or PPD. It’s designed to help you transition from high school into university life, not just academically, but personally too. In PPD, you’ll develop the skills that support success both inside and outside the classroom. You’ll learn to manage your time, reflect on your goals, and take ownership of your journey. It’s practical, and supportive while providing you with the tools you need before the challenges come.
Tutors and Guidance
Tutors and Guidance
From your first day to your final semester, you’ll be paired with a tutor. This person is there to get to know you, to support your growth and to help navigate decisions, academics or otherwise. Whether you’re choosing courses, rethinking your direction, or facing a personal hurdle, your tutor offers continuity, clarity, and encouragement. At UCR, you build you own journey, but you don’t have to do it alone.
Sometimes, life at university brings unexpected pressure. That’s why UCR offers access to a professional student counselor for one-on-one, confidential support. Whether you’re facing academic stress, emotional overwhelm, personal issues, or moments of self-doubt, the counselor is there to listen, without judgment. If more specialized care is needed, the counselor can also help you connect to the right services within or beyond Middelburg.
Building Habits
Building Habits
Well-being at UCR isn’t just reactive, it’s proactive and practical. We offer regular workshops on mindfulness, resilience, stress management, and community care. These sessions are led by faculty, staff, and experts who understand what life at UCR is really like. You also have access to MoodLift, an online resource that helps you work on focus, sleep, motivation, and mood, on your own terms and in your own time. The goal is always to equip you, not just fix a problem. We focus on the small habits that help you stay balanced throughout the semester.
Spaces as Support
Spaces as Support
The physical spaces on campus are part of our well-being approach, too. In Eleanor, you’ll find a dedicated well-being area, a peaceful zone for meditation, yoga, reading, or simply taking a moment for yourself. There are even sleeping pods for those days when rest becomes a necessity. Behind the Anne building, you’ll find the private Anne Garden, a hidden green space perfect for reflection, work, or quiet conversations with a friend. These aren’t just extras, they’re reminders that well-being belongs in your daily life.
